Alleen Ester Derham of Christiansburg died Tuesday evening in her home surrounded by her children and grandchildren.
Alleen was born August 23, 1923 in Christiansburg, VA. She graduated from Christiansburg High School in 1941 and moved to Greensboro where she met her late husband Maj. Edward J Derham. They had five children together and traveled around the states and overseas while Edward was in the Air Force. After his death, Alleen returned to Christiansburg with her three youngest children. She worked in the Montgomery County Treasurer’s Office until she retired in 1984.
Alleen is survived by her five children; Mary Alice Wade of Highlandville, Missouri; Ruth Townsend of Glen Allen, Virginia; Ed Derham Jr. of Savannah, Georgia; Dee Dee Tamminen of Mesa, Arizona; and Jimmy Derham of Childress, Virginia. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Her passions were reading, gardening, and sharing her love and laughter with friends and family. She was loved dearly by many for her infectious zest for life.
Visitation will be Monday April 25th at Horne Funeral Home in Christiansburg from 5:30 pm to 8 pm with Rosary at 7:30 pm. The Memorial Mass will be at 10 am on Tuesday April 26th at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Blacksburg, VA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are made to the Christiansburg Rescue Squad in her honor.
