Allie Marie Sutphin Radford started walking on streets of gold with her Lord and Savior on October 14, 2015. Marie was born on August 10, 1931 in Dry Valley, Montgomery County, Virginia, to Rose Belle Painter Sutphin and John Walter Sutphin as the youngest of three girls.
Marie never truly retired as she consistently found new ways to serve people. She took care of her parents, her two children, and many of the children of Christiansburg. She operated Cambria Early Learning Center for many years and had a great impact upon the lives of those children as many still speak of their precious memories with her. Not only did she serve children, Marie also served those in their last days at Warm Hearth Village. She cared for so many with respect and dignity in the most difficult of situations. Marie was an example of a tireless love and devotion to her family and her community. She would sacrifice over and over to see the needs of others met.
Marie loved gatherings of people. She was a fan of country and bluegrass music and enjoyed the adventure of a flea market. She spent many years participating in the Hillsville Flea Market and more than anything, enjoyed the time with friends and music after closing. For many years, she would host large gatherings at her home and stay up late in the evening listening to the musicians and catching up with friends. She truly loved people. It is this example of serving others that we find her pointing to Jesus over and over. She wanted all who knew her to know of her love for God and her desire to see others follow His Word.
Marie is preceded in death by her father and mother; and her sisters Mary Catherine Morris and Flossie Bell Hosey. Survivors include her loving and faithful husband of 58 years, Eldred Shade Radford; her son, William Edward Gordon and wife Shelia Gordon of Christiansburg; her daughter, Dorothy Jean Gordon Moye and husband Dan Kitts Moye of Pensacola, Fl; and six grandchildren; Mariah King of Richmond; Kristie Gordon Woolwine of Christiansburg; Kimberly Lewis of Pensacola, Fl; Douglas Gordon of Christiansburg; Angela Iverson of Biloxi, MS; and Wesley Gordon of Christiansburg. Marie is also survived by 13 precious great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, October 17, 2015 from 10-11 a.m. at Horne Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will be following at 11 a.m., with Russell Gordon officiating. Interment will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
