Alvin Ray Wimmer, 86, of Christiansburg, passed away on Tuesday, April 22, 2014.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Judy Kaye Wimmer; brothers, Lamar, Harless, Wesley, and Winston; sisters, Marie Wimmer and Daphne McNiel. He was the son of the late Edgar and Claude Wimmer. Ray is survived by his wife of 61 years, Marie June Vest Wimmer; daughter, Janet Ray Wimmer; sisters, Lois Epperly and Dorothy Meredith of Christiansburg; sisters-in-law, Vera Clower, Kaula Dowdy, and Clara (Leo) Southern; brothers-in-law, L.C. Vest and LeeRoy (Carol) Vest; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Ray was a very involved member of the Huffvillle United Methodist Church by singing in the choir, teaching Sunday School classes and supporting the church with his prayers and attendance. He retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation in 1990. He loved to bowl and enjoyed all the many friends he made bowling in the Up and At’Em Senior league. He loved to work with his flowers and mow his yard. He had managed and cared for Huffville Cemetery for many years.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the many family and friends for your support and care during Ray’s declining health. Also special thanks to Carilion Home Health and Carilion Hospice for the care he received over the past few months.
The family received friends on Wednesday, April 23, 2014, from 5-8 p.m. at Horne Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 24, 20144, at 11 a.m. at the Huffville United Methodist Church, 1078 Huffville Road, Pilot, with Pastor Darren Landon officiating. Interment will follow in Huffville Cemetery.
