Anna Mae Saunders

October 24, 1935 — September 22, 2022

Anna Mae Saunders, 86 of Christiansburg VA died peacefully in her sleep September 22, 2022 at her home surrounded by her son and daughter, her friend Daniel and her beloved dog Charlie. Anna was born over Beaver Creek in Floyd VA Oct 24th 1935 so prematurely they had to carry her on a pillow to hold her. She was preceded in death by her parents Tony and Mary Susan Simmons; her brothers James Simmons and Norman Simmons; her sisters Doris, Irene and Diane; her granddaughter Sidney; and her "Good Looking Husband" of 56 years Charles Phillip Saunders. She is survived by her children Chris Saunders and his wife Susan of Blacksburg and Phyllis Ann Saunders of Christiansburg; her grandchildren Charles Saunders of Blacksburg VA, Montana Lucas of Easly SC, Byron Pennington of Ashland VA, Rebecca Pennington of Riner VA;and and 5 great-grandchildren, Emma Moon Lucas, Aurora Dawn Lucas, Jaxson Philip Lucas, Matthew William Saunders and Hannah Clair Saunders.
Anna grew up in Floyd and Riner VA and was the first in her family to graduate from Alburn High School in 1956. She worked for Jacksons Hardware downtown Christiansburg where she met Phil Saunders, they dated at the Palace Theater and when married moved to Christiansburg in 1957. She was a homemaker, church choir member, volunteer, professional musician, dancer, songwriter, poet, painter for over 40 years. She volunteered throughout the NRV and surrounding counties performing at nursing homes and hospitals. One year alone she played 320 times as a member of the Joy Makers music group. She was a beloved harmonica player at Carl Jones' "The Barn" and events throughout the area.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff with the NRV Hospice service for their kind and loving care, especially our angel Becca.
There will be a Celebration of Life and Music Ceremony Sat Nov 26th, 2022 at 2PM at the Christiansburg Church of the Brethren and the family and community are invited. Anyone interested in participating in music should send a message to Phyllis or Chris Saunders.
