Arlie Jean Sutphin, 76, of Christiansburg, passed away peacefully while surrounded by her family members on Monday, January 11, 2016, at Lewis Gale Montgomery Hospital in Blacksburg. She was born to Arlon and Pauline (Poage) Lancaster on July 5, 1939, in Christiansburg. From her birth to her death, she nourished those around her with love. Arlie truly lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures – spending time with her children and grandchildren, chatting with friends, and working with her hands at Hardee’s in downtown Christiansburg. She reached many in a deep and positive way.
Arlie was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Sutphin; parents, Arlon and Pauline Lancaster; brothers, Eddie and Bill Lancaster; and son-in-law, Bobby VanDyke. She is survived by her sons, Larry Sutphin (Rhonda) of Christiansburg, VA, Paul Sutphin (Ron), of Wilmington NC, Daryl Sutphin (Steve) of Princeton, WV; daughters, Debbie VanDyke of Inman, SC, Sherry Vaughn (Donald) of Inman, SC, Carol Sutphin (Dorothy) of Christiansburg; grandchildren, Charles DiRico of Charlotte, NC, Tony Rowland (Ashley) of Inman, SC, Brooks Sutphin (Cheryl) of Christiansburg, VA, Lauren Sutphin (Carless) of Christiansburg, VA, Cody Vaughn of Inman, SC; great-grandchildren, Alannah Clements of Roanoke, VA, Brooklyn Sutphin of Christiansburg, VA, Alexis Rowland of Inman, SC, Colton Harris of Christiansburg, VA; brother, Kenny Lancaster (Darlene) of Christiansburg, VA; sister, Patsy Whitlow of Troutville, VA; special friend of the family, Leslie Hetherington; as well as her special cat and sleeping companion, Max.
The family extends our gratitude to personal caregivers Anna Haga and Donna Robinette.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 14, 2016, 6-8 p.m. at Horne Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will be held on Friday, January 15, 2016, at 1 p.m. in the Horne Funeral Home Chapel, with Charles DiRico and Earl Clemons officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery.
