Arvin Wayne Gardner, 71, of Christiansburg, passed away Monday, April 15, 2013, surrounded by his mother and family. He was the son of Irvin and Wenona Gardner. He was preceded in death by his father.
In addition to his mother, Wenona S. Gardner, he is survived by two sisters, Linda Gayle Gardner of Radford, and Judy Loveday & husband, Wayne of Riner; and a brother, David Gardner & wife, Judy of Durham, NC. He was “Uncle Wayne” to five nieces and seven nephews, who always sought his advice and direction throughout their life. He also has a multitude of great-nieces and nephews.
Wayne served in the U.S. Army Reserve for seven years, reaching the rank of SSGT. He worked for General Electric in Salem, VA, as an Electronic Systems Test Technician. He retired after forty years of service, and maintained many close acquaintances, with whom he enjoyed many fishing trips.
The family will receive visitors at Horne Funeral Home on Friday, April 19th, from 6-8 p.m. A graveside Memorial will be held on Saturday, April 20th at 2:00 p.m. at the Gardner Family Cemetery in Dugspur, VA, with the Rev. Bobby Sutphin officiating.
In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, 2840 Electric Road, Suite 106-A, Roanoke, VA 24018.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Carilion Clinic Hospice, especially Heather and Lindsay, for their tender care at the end of his journey.
