STAPLES, ASHLEY COX, age 91, of Christiansburg, died Saturday, December 4, 2004.
He was born July 4, 1913, in Hillsville, Virginia. A World War II veteran, he had worked at the Radford Arsenal and was a retired pipe fitter with the Plumbers & Pipe fitters Union, Local 491, Roanoke, VA. He was a member of the Christiansburg Church of the Brethren, McDaniel Lodge # 86 A.F. & A.M, and the Montgomery County Democratic Party.
Ashley was preceded in death by his parents, Franklin Douglas and Mary Ellen Staples; his brothers, Harry Staples and Edward Staples; and his sisters, Maude Worrell, Marjorie Malloy, Ruby Baker and Fannie Ward. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Alverta Cannaday Staples; a daughter and son-in-law, Sarah and Douglas Gray of Hampton, VA; a granddaughter and her husband, Angela and J.R. Gilley; two great grandchildren, Katie and Ryan of Hampton, VA; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 Monday evening at the Horne Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 7, at the Christiansburg Church of the Brethren conducted by Rev. Don Peters. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery with Masonic Graveside Rites conducted by McDaniel Lodge # 86.
