ATKINS, LEATHIA PORTERFIELD, 77 of Pembroke, VA, passed away in the loving care of her family, after a courageous battle with cancer, on December 3, 2011, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law in Christiansburg, VA.
She was born on April 9, 1934 to William Lewis and Florence Wren Porterfield, Newport, VA. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Nellie (Dee) Janey, Pembroke, and a brother, Lewis Linden Porterfield, Newport. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, John Edward Atkins, Pembroke, VA; her daughter and son-in-law, Kathy Atkins and Andy Eames, Christiansburg; daughter and son-in-law, Lenora and Thomas Turner, Roanoke, VA; four grandchildren, Gregory Atkins, Christiansburg; and Lara, Thomas, and Allison Turner of Roanoke. Also left to cherish her memory are Jane Janey Murley, a sister; and William Porterfield, a brother, both of Blacksburg, VA.
Leathia was a person of great faith and her generous and gracious spirit endeared her to many. She was a member of Grace Life Baptist Church, Christiansburg.
Out of respect for Leathia’s wishes, no visitation will be held. A graveside service will be conducted on Tuesday, December 6, 2011 at 11 a.m. at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Christiansburg with Rev. Dr. A. Timothy Hight officiating.
