Bula Anderson Shelburne, 100, of Richmond, died Monday, July 29, 2013. She was born March 19, 1913, in Welch, W.Va., and grew up in Floyd County. She later lived in Montgomery County and was a graduate of Christiansburg High School and a member of St. Paul's Methodist Church. She was a hair stylist in Christiansburg for many years and retired from that position after moving to Richmond in 1963 with her husband James and two sons. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Lucian Shelburne Sr.
She is survived by her sons, James Lucian Shelburne Jr. and John David Shelburne; daughter-in-law, Edith Shelburne; five grandchildren, Diana, Melissa, Linda, David, and James, all of Richmond; three sisters, Margie Boschert of Linthicum, Md., Blanche Workman, of Virginia Beach, and Barbara Anderson, of Richmond; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was a member of Welborne United Methodist Church in Richmond. Bula was a devoted wife and mother and enjoyed being outdoors working in the yard and talking with her neighbors.
The family will receive friends at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 N. Parham Road on Wednesday, July 31, 2013, from 6 to 8 p.m. A visitation will be held at Horne Funeral Service, 1300 N. Franklin St., Christiansburg, VA 24073 on Thursday, August 1, from 6 to 8 p.m. A graveside service will be held Friday, August 2, at 1 p.m. at Sunset Cemetery in Christiansburg.
