AKERS, BYRON LEE, 75, of Shawsville, VA, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 4, 2011, at Lewis Gale Medical Center in Salem.
He was born December 16, 1935 in Floyd County. He was preceded in death by his parents, Talford and Ruby Akers.
Surviving are his loving and devoted wife of 27 years, Cledith “Flo” Kincer Akers; daughter and son-in-law, Joyce & Norman Fitzwater of Blacksburg; brother and sister-in-law, Dean & Verna Mae Akers of Willis; two granddaughters, Nicole Fitzwater of Charlottesville and Sarah & Ben Price of Roanoke; aunts, Vada Reed of Riner, Patty Akers of Newport News, and Velta Maxey of Roanoke; sisters-in-law, Nancy & Pat King of Wytheville, Eunice Blankenship of Rural Retreat and Doris Wall of Wytheville; 15 nephews and 4 nieces, which he loved; special companions, Buddie, Katie, Little Bit and Peanut; special friends, Cindy Hale, Sandra Conner and the Wilson family.
Byron was a member of the Harbor of Hope Pentecostal Holiness Church in Christiansburg, VA. He loved his extraordinary church family.
Byron was an avid Nascar fan, raced for many years himself here locally and was a crew member of Wilson “08” racing.
He was also a member of the Masonic Craighill Lodge #160 as well as the Kazim Shriners of Roanoke, VA.
The family will receive friends on Friday, May 6, 2011, from 5-8 pm at the Harbor of Hope Pentecostal Holiness Church, Christiansburg. The funeral service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, May 7, 2011, at the Harbor of Hope Pentecostal Holiness Church, Christiansburg, with Reverend Richard Kingrea and Reverend Leon Alley officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens with Masonic Graveside Rights, Christiansburg.
