Christine D. Akers, 77 of Christiansburg, VA went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, March 17, 2015. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother with a gracious heart and infectious smile. She was born on August 9, 1937 in Jenkins, KY a daughter to Leffey and Flora Burke.
She was predeceased by her parents; one brother, Arville Burke; two sisters and spouses Barbara & GE Powers; Wanda & Eugene Glisson and two sisters-in-law Learlene Burke and Ruth Spaulding; one brother-in-law Thurman Spaulding.
Christine is survived by her husband of 58 years JC; one son Wayne and Tanya Akers of Christiansburg; one daughter Joetta and Henry Whitehurst of Christiansburg; grandchildren Christi and Barry Elliott, John Sparks, Brian and Valerie Mullins, Stephanie and Derrick Boyd, Stacy and Shep Millar, Tyler Marcum, James Akers, Shannon and Chad Cannon, and Breana Akers; great-grandchildren, Gavin, Mallory, Brooklyn, Alexis, Nicholas, Natalie, Avery, and Eden; brothers and sisters, Jean Burke of Wyoming MI, Lavon and Truman Conley of Jenkins, KY, Granville Burke of Gas City, IN, Kenneth and Lois Burke of Versailles, KY, Ronald and Bernice Burke of Radford, VA; two aunts and too many nieces, nephews and cousins to mention.
Christine loved her church family and was a devoted member of Belview United Methodist Church for 42 years. She retired from Corning after 18 years of service. Her favorite hobbies were family, grandkids, dancing, singing and crafts. Christine never met a stranger and her laughter will be missed by us all.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Christine’s caregiver who we all love dearly Evelyn Raines.
Her family will be receiving friends from 5–8 p.m. on Friday, March 20, 2015 at Horne Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 21, 2015, in the Horne Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Sebert Rorrer officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
