Christine T. Reed, of Christiansburg, died January 5, 2016, after a long life filled with love for her family and devotion to God. She was 85.
Born April 28, 1930, Audrey Christine Thompson was the oldest daughter of Trigg and Lala Thompson of Floyd County.
She married Chrisley Harden Reed on Sept. 7, 1951. They were married 64 years.
She is survived by her husband, three sons and four grandchildren: Wayne and Diana (deceased) of Nashville, their sons Erik (deceased) and Kevin; Gary and Linda of Sacramento, Calif.; Jeff and Tammy of Christiansburg, their children Caleb, Tanner and Erika.
She had nine brothers and sisters: Cedric, Glenn, Betty Teel and Russell who preceded her in death; and Major, Joe, Erma Jean Gallimore, Nancy Tackett and Marie Hensley.
After growing up on a farm in Floyd County, she worked as a teller at the Bank of Christiansburg. In the early '70s she served as postmaster in Copper Valley, Floyd County.
She was a longtime member of the Christiansburg Church of Christ, where she had many wonderful friends and served as the church's secretary. For the past few years she attended the Laurel Hill Church of Christ.
Christine enjoyed painting and crafts, card games and jigsaw puzzles. She was an excellent cook and baker. Fried chicken, gravy and biscuits were a frequent request from Harden. Snickerdoodles, peanut butter cookies and fruitcake were always on the Christmas treats list. She made the best black raspberry jelly and tasty homemade bread.
She loved to travel with family and friends, with trips to the Holy Lands and England, to the California coast and Hawaii, Newfoundland and the Canadian Rockies, Myrtle Beach and Disney World. She also was known for her long, brisk walks through the neighborhood.
Most of all, she loved family and friends, raising her children and taking care of her grandchildren. She made everyone feel welcome in her home. Thompson reunions were summer rituals not to be missed. Close friendships developed through church were cherished.
Thank you to Jeff and Tammy for caring for Christine in her later years and to the staff at Wheatland Hills.
