Dennie Ray Hurst

A warm wind of heaven blew softly upon Hurst road on December 19th, 2024. The great spirit brought love and peace as pain and suffering ended. Dennie Hurst passed onto heaven surrounded by his loved ones on Thursday morning. 

He was a hillbilly mountain man who was born February 16th, 1964 to Sam and Roberta Hurst of Shawsville VA. He was a lifelong member of the Alleghany Springs community. A 1982 graduate of SHS. Dennie was married to his wife Khristi for 37 years and they were widely known for their crafts. Dennie loved to buy, sell, trade, and bicker for the best sale. He was very thrifty and a penny pincher. 

Dennie was blessed with three beautiful children and two granddaughters. Dennit Hurst, Allison Hurst (wife), and their daughters Meredith and Madeline. His favorite sidekick Dewey Hurst, and his pride and joy Sissy (Khristine Hurst). Dennie also gained a beautiful bonus family through his best friend Andrea Weddle. 

The last years of his life Dennie appreciated the most important things which was love, family, and friends. Dennie was an avid fisherman and a true lover of the Roanoke River along with all the hills and hollers we call home. His heart was in the mountain and always will be. He also loved to play a good hand of poker and enjoyed rock and roll to his core. He will be missed at the dinner table along with his stories and tall tales about livin’. 

His celebration of life will be on Saturday December 28th, at 4pm at 2682 Hickman Hollow Road, Shawsville Va 24162. The family asks for prayers and stories about Dennie to be shared with each other so we can remember him together.
