LAWSON, Dennis Eugene “Daddy Gene” 63 of Christiansburg, went to walk with his parents, James & Mae Belle Lawson and his brother, James T. Lawson, on September 13, 2007.
Born on May 31, 1944 of Humble beginnings, his 10 siblings toughened his tell-you-like-it-is mentality. He learned to use his hands as a cabinet maker leading to a lifetime of skills that would serve him well. He was quick to figure out how things worked, and astonished people at how he could simplify the largest tasks. Never to meet a stranger he would carry on lengthy conversations with anyone willing to listen; anyone found at his doorstep was welcomed in. A jack of all trades he could do anything he set out to do. In his later years he founded and worked at the family business, close to his friends and his heart. Full of stories that were mostly true, Gene liked the outdoors, he loved to fish and golf, but was never afraid to roll up his sleeves and work for what he needed. His playful, loving spirit will be missed by all that knew him. Above all else, Gene loved his friends and family, and was a very proud father and Paw-Paw.
He is survived by three children, Jody Lawson, Jill Lawson and James Lawson and wife; Aimee Lawson. Three beloved grandchildren, Meranda Lawson, Kaitlynn Moore and Jonah Lawson. Brothers and sisters-in-law, Sherwood and Barbara Lawson, Haven Lawson, Eddie and Liz Lawson, and LeeRoy and Darlene Lawson. Sisters and brothers-in-law, Delana Gravely, Darlene Hawley, Betty Wimmer, Doreda and James Keith, and Brenda Lawson. Numerous nieces and nephews. A very special niece Diana Stuart who was always there by his side.
Special thanks to friend and sister-in-law, Jewel Woods, and all the nurses at Adventa Hospice. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations by made to Adventa Hospice Services in Salem.
The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Monday, September 17, 2007 at The Horne Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 18, 2007 in The Horne Funeral Home Chapel with Chaplain Todd Triplett. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery.
