Blacksburg

It is with a heavy heart that we honor the life of Dorothy Gilbert, who was called home to her eternal rest on April 1, 2025, after a long and valiant battle with illness. Born on April 17, 1931, in the loving home of Clyde M. and Hattie Lowe Ferrell, Dorothy's life was a testament to the grace of God and the profound impact one soul can have on those around her.

Dorothy blessed the world for nearly ninety-four years, dedicating her life to the noble pursuit of caring for others through her extensive career in nursing. Her compassion and unwavering commitment to the wellbeing of others were hallmarks of her character, serving as a beacon of hope and love to all who crossed her path. She lived out her faith by serving, and her legacy will forever resonate in the hearts of those she touched.

A proud founding member and the esteemed choir director of Gethsemane Baptist Church in Richlands, Virginia, Dorothy shared her love of music and her devotion to God with her beloved community. Her lilting voice uplifted spirits, bringing forth joy and fostering a deep connection with the Divine. Her contributions to the church and its members remain a testament to her strength, faith, and leadership.

Dorothy leaves behind a loving family who shared in the blessings of her life. She is survived by her cherished daughter, Pamela Sparks (Joseph), and her devoted son, Marc Gilbert (Ellen). In her later years, she was blessed with the joy of five grandchildren: Suzanne, Chyril, Marcus, Kimberly, and Scott, as well as three great-grandchildren: Izzy, Charlotte, and Penny, each of whom she loved dearly.  Her beloved sister and last living member of the family Cornellia Cox, alongside numerous nieces and nephews who will carry forward her legacy of love and kindness.

In this time of sorrow, we extend our sincere thanks to the wonderful staff at English Meadows and Medi Hospice for their exceptional care throughout Dorothy's journey. Their compassionate support was a blessing in her final days, and we are eternally grateful for their service.

As we reflect on the life of Dorothy Gilbert, we remember not only her strength and resilience but also her unwavering faith and the light she brought into the world. Her spirit will continue to inspire us as we celebrate the love she shared and the lives she nurtured. May she rest in eternal peace.
