HINES, Edwin Franklin (Ed, E.F.), 91 of Ft. Collins, Colorado and formerly of Radford, Virginia, passed away on April 8, 2011. He and his wife Julia, moved to Colorado in 2002 from Nashville, Tennessee to be closer to family.
Ed was born in Carroll County, Virginia to Edwin Fletcher Hines and Mary Ann Elizabeth “Annie” Edwards, on November 6, 1919. He grew up in Radford and married his high school sweetheart Julia Mildred Smith, daughter of Roy G. and Anna Belle Farmer Smith of Radford, Virginia on December 7, 1940.
During World War II, Ed served his Country in the Eighth Air Force, stationed in England and was the pilot of a B-17. After the war ended, Ed worked with his dad in construction in Radford and later owned and operated the Radford Airport for several years. Being a seasoned pilot many folks from Radford took flying lessons, soloed and obtained their flying licenses through the years of Ed’s encouragement and knowledge. One of his students was his younger brother, Lewis “Gray” Hines of Snowville, VA. There has been much reminiscing between Ed and Gray about those “Good Ole Days”!
Ed was a God fearing Christian man, who loved his country and above all set forth a good example for his children to follow. Along with his parents and his mother and father-in-law, Ed was also preceded in death by his brother; James Price Hines in 1996, sister, Margie Marie Hines Roop in 2000, and a son Eric Alan “Ricky” Hines in 2006, several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law and a niece Sheryl Hines Duncan in 2009.
Ed is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Julia and their children, Dr. Judy Hines Bruce and her husband, Ray of Colorado, James “Jim” Hines and his wife, Karen of Arizona, and Amy Hines Jones and her husband Bob of Hong Kong, China and Cranbrook, Canada, a daughter-in-law; Vickie Hines, 12 grandchildren and great grandchildren. Also surviving are his youngest brother, Lewis “Gray” and his wife Carolyn Altizer Hines of Snowville and several nieces, nephews and their families, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law and their families.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at 10 a.m. at Faith E. Free Church in Ft. Collins, Colorado. Military rites service will be conducted at a later date.
