October 15, 1933 — April 25, 2014

Francis L. Spicer (Frank), 80, of Christiansburg, VA was welcomed into heaven on Friday, April 25, 2014 after a valiant fight with lung cancer.

Frank was born on October 15, 1933 in Centralia, Kansas to Walter and Eunice Spicer. His family joyfully greeting him in heaven include his parents Walter and Eunice, brother Wayne, sister-in-law Rose and brothers-in-law Tom Haines and Ray Stewart.

His surviving family includes: Wife of 59 years: Mary K. Spicer, sons Lee (Pam), Phillip, Stephen (Kim), Andrick (Donna) and daughter Kathleen (Tom) Sharp. Grandchildren: Ashleigh (fiancée Ian Cassidy), Brittany, and Nicholas Spicer, Lindsay (Jeff) Knox, David (Elissa) Keenan. Great-Grandchildren: Willow, David and Molly Keenan, Benjamin and Colton Knox. Brother Derald (Bernice), sisters Dorothy Haines and Janice Stewart. Extended family: Burris (Barbara) Dennis, Daryl (Judy) Dennis, Karl (Debbie) Landis, and many beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews.

After graduating from Topeka High School he joined the US Navy where he served on LST 742 during the Korean Conflict. He attended LeTourneau Technical Institute, Longview, TX, receiving a BS in Mechanical Science Engineering in 1959. His professional career spanned 33 years with Hercules Powder Company.

Possessing a true servant’s heart, he served the Lord with gladness as a Sunday School teacher, choir member and Deacon. He faithfully cared for family, and community as a co-founder and director of the local chapter of Up With People (Sing Out Pulaski). Active in the Boy Scouts, he was the first Webelo Leader in the Moneton District and served as a Scoutmaster. Frank served as the president of VASARDA and was instrumental in establishing Square Dance as the official dance of Virginia.

Known for his ease of conversation, his double bass voice was a highlight of many community and church productions. His gifts of joy and service to others, accompanied by laughter will never be forgotten. His unwavering faith in God, the love and prayers of family and friends throughout his own struggle with cancer, gave him the resilience to reach out to provide comfort and humor to others sitting nearby receiving their Chemo treatments simultaneously.

The family would like to thank all those who brought joy to his life.

Memorial donations in Frank’s honor may be made to: GraceLife Baptist Church or Boy Scouts of America.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on May 17, 2014 at 11:00 am at Horne Funeral Service, Christiansburg, VA. Dr. A. Timothy Hight will officiate.
