Fred Palmer

November 16, 1923 — January 23, 2010

Palmer, Fred Stratton, 86, of Floyd County, VA, passed away on Saturday, January 23, 2010 at his residence surrounded by his family.

Fred was born on November 16, 1923 in the Childress Community of Montgomery County, VA to the late Howard and Zannie Hall Palmer. He was also preceded in death by sons, Fred S. Palmer, Jr. and Richard A. “Dicky” Palmer; and brothers, Howard and Jack Palmer.


He served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a flight engineer in WWII and retired as supervisor of the drafting room from R.A.A.P. after 37 years of service. He attended Floyd United Methodist Church and served as a Boy Scout leader with numerous troops throughout the area. He loved gardening, bird watching, fishing, and the outdoors. He loved spending time with and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Fred is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Ann Dunn Palmer; children, Sandra Palmer Moye and husband Jr. of Riner, VA and Elizabeth Palmer Barbage and husband Barry of Ijamsville, MD; sister, Ruth Hight of Phoenix, AZ; 8 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and especially his loving dog “Mandy.”

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Blue Ridge Chapter, One Morton Drive, Suite 106, Charlottesville, VA 22903. A memorial service will be conducted on Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at 11:00 am from the chapel of Horne Funeral Home with Rev. Richard Gregory officiating. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 26, 2010 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Horne Funeral Home.
