Fred J. Thompson, 87, of Riner, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, September 25, 2012.
He was born on October 24, 1924, to the late Charles and Ethel Thompson. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Marie; brother, Ward Thompson; and grandsons, Randall Price and Freddie Price.
He is survived by his only child, daughter Teresa Thompson (Ron) of Riner; nephew, Danny Thompson (Nancy) of Riner; niece, Barbara Griffith (Glen) of Riner; special stepson, Randy Price (Debbie) of Riner; special stepdaughter, Janice Wright of Rocky Mount; granddaughter, Jessica Wright (Cory) of Fairlawn; stepdaughters, Darlene Fitting (Kent) of Riner and Donna Slagle of Illinois; and grandchildren, Christopher, Timothy, Mathew and Teresa.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a farmer and owned and operated his dump truck hauling business.
The family would like to express their deepest and sincere thanks to Dr. Conaster and his staff for the exceptional care they gave Dad. Also, a heartfelt thanks to caregivers Jane, Kim, Jeanny and April for their amazing care and love they provided Dad. Thank you also to Radford Carilion Hospice for their wonderful and compassionate care and support.
The family will receive friends from 5-8 pm on Thursday, September 27, 2012, at Horne Funeral Home, Christiansburg. The funeral service will be held on Friday, September 28th at 11 am at Fellowship Baptist Church, Surface Road, Riner, with Pastor James Bradley officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery.
