Garland C. Atkinson, 85, of Christiansburg, passed away on April 4, 2016. He was born on June 8, 1930, in Shawsville, Va. He worked at Radford Army Ammunition Plant for 36 years and served as a foreman in the NG area. He was a faithful member of Faith Christian Church for over 20 years and served as a deacon and elder. He has been a member of Alleghany Church of Christ for 4 ½ years.
Garland was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Pauline N. Atkinson; and parents, Robert E. and Lucy Atkinson. He is survived by his wife of 4 ½ years, Carol Wood; daughter, Sandy A. Bland and son-in-law, James E. Bland, Jr.; two grandchildren, Laura B. Smith and husband Andy Smith, Dr. James Travis Bland and wife Kristal N. Bland; two great-grandchildren, Kinsey N. Bland and Kylie D. Bland; three step-children, Bently Wood, Karen Hanley, and Michelle Rhoads and husband Roger; four step-grandchildren, Andreanna and Chris Harris, Joseph and Kristina Walker, Chelsea Wood, Bailey Wood, Danielle Witcher, and Joshua Hocker; and two step-great-grandchildren, Illiana Walker and Lynnette Harris. He is also survived by nine brothers and sisters, Howard and Linda Atkinson, Jack and Betty Atkinson, Vivian and Dale Semones, Dick and Kaye Atkinson, Phyllis and James Epperly, Mack Atkinson, Allen and Corrine Atkinson, Connie Hall, Debbie and Robert Belcher; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Garland will be greatly missed.
The family would like to thank Carilion Hospice caregivers and the Lewis Gale Montgomery doctors and nurses for their care of Garland.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 6, 2016, from 6-8 p.m. at Horne Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, April 7, 2016, at 2 p.m. in the Horne Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Porter Riner officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Christiansburg.
