Gaye Simpkins

December 20, 1911 — June 10, 2006

SIMPKINS, Gaye Vest, peacefully passed away from this life, Saturday, June 10, 2006. She was the widow of Edgar C. Simpkins and the last surviving member of the Willie F. and Tabitha Jane Vest family. She was preceded in death by four sisters; Annie Shaver, Copper Hill, Ella Phillips, Christiansburg, Elizabeth Fitzwater, Bridgewater, Ruby Fitzwater, Hagerstown, Maryland, and three brothers; Morris Vest, Copper Hill, Robert C. Vest, Roanoke, and Thomas Vest of Check. She is survived by twenty-two nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Simpkins attended Harris Cannaday Presbyterian Mission School near her Copper Hill home and was a 1934 graduate of Bridgewater College. She taught in Floyd County Schools for twenty-three years, beginning in one -room schools and finishing at Floyd County High School in 1956. She shared her love of music and the Bible by serving as pianist and teaching Sunday school at Bethlehem Methodist Church. She sought ways to be of service to those around her, in her church, family, neighborhood and in various civic organizations.

The family will receive friends from 1 - 2 p.m. on Monday at The Horne Funeral Home with a funeral service to be held in The Horne funeral Home Chapel at 2 p.m. Monday. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery.
