Gene Wallace, 73, of Floyd, VA, passed away on Saturday, October 13, 2012, at Heritage Hall in Blacksburg, VA. He was born May 29, 1939, in Grundy, VA. He graduated from Christiansburg High School and continued his education at Diesel Mechanics School in Tennessee. He served in the United States Army and was stationed in Juno, Alaska. He also attended Virginia Western Community College earning his degree in Civil Engineering. Gene had a long career with VDOT, retiring after 42 ½ years of service. He was a member of the Floyd Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas E. & Georgie M. Wallace; brother, Mason Wallace; and brother-in-law, Lloyd France. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Patsy S. Wallace; son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Dierdre “Dee” Wallace of Floyd; sons, Chris Wallace of Christiansburg, and Tim Wallace of Floyd; grandchild, Christian Cromer; sister, Patty France; and other extended family members.
Gene spoke often and fondly of the many special friends he made while working at VDOT and at the Virginia Tech football games. He enjoyed sharing his sly sense of humor and rarely missed the opportunity to cut-up and have a good time amongst his friends. He enjoyed watching high school sports and taking the occasional fishing trip to Little River.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff and residents of “The Villa” at Heritage Hall for their compassionate care and service.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 18, 2012, from 12-2 pm at Horne Funeral Home, Christiansburg. The funeral service will commence at 2 pm in the Chapel with Pastor Joe Womack officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Christiansburg.
