George 'Bo' Cameron Newcomb, Jr.

December 3, 1945 — April 1, 2024

Christiansburg

George Cameron Newcomb Jr, 78, of Christiansburg passed away April 1, 2024.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Karen Newcomb; parents, George Newcomb Sr. & Ever Mae Newcomb; sisters, Kitty Newcomb, Emma Lee Nunnally, Marguerete Jackson, and Mae Holder.

George is survived by his children, Jonathan and Jonni Newcomb; Jennifer and Ron Meinecke; and Kevin Newcomb; grandchildren, Megan, Micah, Landyn, Harrison, and Lily; his loving friend, Linda Shelburne, several nieces and nephews, and countless friends who were like family.

To some, he was known as Command Sergeant Major Newcomb, a Vietnam Veteran, and an army reservist. To those in his community, he was affectionately known as "Bo".  He graduated from Virginia Tech; then worked for the federal government at the Radford Arsenal.  After his children graduated from Christiansburg High School, Bo stayed as a volunteer for the choral departments. He did many jobs there including building sets for the choral and theater departments. Bo was at the school so frequently, some assumed he was a paid employee. This service eventually led to the high school auditorium being named after him. Bo was also one of Santa's beloved helpers at a variety of community events each year. He participated in organizations within his church community, including choirs and mission work. He was a regular blood donor through the Red Cross, and he worked The Relay for Life for many years. Bo made a huge impact on countless people.

Bo loved being a grandfather.  He never missed a birthday, performance or event for the “Cousin 5”.  Each Christmas, he asked his family to choose someone else to support with gifts instead of himself.

He demonstrated how to help others, without being in the limelight.  The purity of his heart and genuineness of his love for others led to a true gift for service. He didn't want to be in the spotlight or to receive payment for his work, but he could always be found with a toolbox in hand and a heart ready to serve.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Bo’s honor to the Christiansburg High School music department to continue the work he supported in the George Bo Newcomb Auditorium.  Checks can be made directly to CHS with “Bo Newcomb Gift” in the memo line.  Mail to Christiansburg High School 100 Independence Blvd. NW Christiansburg VA 24073.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 7, 2024, at Belmont Christian Church.  Funeral services will follow at 3:00 p.m. with Mr. Beaver Terry officiating.  Interment will be private at the Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery.
