George Daniel Spangler, Jr., 89, of Shawsville, VA, passed away on Saturday, September 3, 2011 at the VA Medical Center in Salem, VA.
He was a World War II Veteran who served in Patton’s Army in France, Europe, Germany, and the Ardennes, where he fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a construction superintendent for the DuPont Company for many years in Virginia, Delaware, North Carolina and Tennessee. He was a life-long member of Laborer’s Local Union No. 980. He was retired for many years, but still worked on the farm that he so loved.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George Daniel Spangler, Sr. and Agnes Jeanette Moore Spangler; brothers; Arnold, Ralph, Thomas, and Robert Spangler; first wife, Edna Marie Blankenship Spangler; infant son, George Randolph Spangler; second wife, Ruth Graham Spangler; and great granddaughter, Samantha Darlene Rentch.
He leaves behind three daughters: Linda Leedy (Jim), Judy Spangler, and Jeanette Alls (Buddy); grandchildren: Daniel Alls, Lora Alls, Danny Rentch (Pauline), Angie Rentch and Michele Yates; 4 great grandchildren; 4 great great grandchildren; as well as a very special brother, Ray Spangler; sisters, Ruby Bell, Shirley Barlow (Franklin), Marie Shark and Edith Yates;3 step children; and 3 step grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Shawsville Volunteer Rescue Squad, PO Box 14, Shawsville, VA 24162.
A private family service will be held at a later date.
