AKERS, GLOURIA MADELINE, age 84, of Christiansburg was promoted to glory on Saturday, August 15, 2009. She was a resident of Radford Nursing and Rehab. Center in Radford, VA.
She was born August 9, 1925 in Wise, VA to the late John Wesley Cox, Sr. and Dallas R. Cox. She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin R. Akers, daughter, Linda Akers Sowder; sister, Nannie Horton, two brothers, John W. Cox, Jr. and Donald W. Cox.
She leaves for now a brother, Thomas P. Cox, Owensboro, KY; her sisters, Dorothy Berry, Stanley, VA and Jeanette Akers, Christiansburg, VA who has been very devoted throughout her entire stay at Radford Nursing and Rehab; son-in-law, Kenneth Sowder, Roanoke, VA; grandson Kenneth Dolinger, Blacksburg, VA, sisters-in-law, Virginia Myers, Irene Cox and Mary Cox, of Christiansburg, VA; numerous nieces and nephews as well as great nieces and nephews, one especially devoted niece through her entire stay at Radfod Nursing and Rehab., Jackie McGuyer, Christiansburg, VA. A host of friends and especially her Guardian Angel, Joe Kitts and wife Doris of Christiansburg, VA, neighbors for 35 years as well as her roommate at the Radford Nursing, her “Baby”, Frances McGraw of the Center as well.
She retired from Imperial Reading after 40 years. She was a member of Harbor of Hope Pentecostal Holiness Church in Christiansburg, since 1952. She dearly loved to quilt and was noted for her chicken-n-dumplings, fried apples, sweet potatoes and iced tea. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Judy as well as the staff, workers, and volunteers of Radford Nursing for the wonderful care she received while a resident.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM on Monday, Aug. 17, at the Horne Funeral Home in Christiansburg, VA. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18th in the Horne Funeral Chapel with Rev. Richard Kingrea officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
