Gregory Wells

WELLS, GREGORY SCOTT, of Christiansburg, died Saturday, July 16, 2005.

He was predeceased by his parents, Dudley E. and Elizabeth C. Wells, and a sister-in-law, Mary W. Wells. He is survived by his wife, Vicki; his sons, Capt. Travis B. Wells and Tyler J. Wells; as well as two brothers, Randall A. Wells and his wife Marjory, and Dudley C. Wells. He is also survived by a stepdaughter, Marsha Woods, her husband Eric and their daughter Jovi; a stepson, Michael Coffman, and his son Quentin. He leaves behind three nieces, Andrea W. Vasaune, Katie V. Wells, and Kaila W. Jones.

Wells served Roanoke College as Academic Advisor and Coordinator of Peer Tutoring & Special Services. At Bethany College (WV), he had served as Director of Student Services and Assistant to the Dean of Students, and at Davis & Elkins College (WV) as Coordinator of the William James Center (1980-96). He had also taught in Huttonsville Prison (WV) and Roanoke County Jail.

A graduate of Colorado State University, Wells served in the Army as an assistant at West Point Military Academy, earned an MA in Clinical Psychology at West Virginia University, and finished the coursework for a doctorate in Educational Leadership Studies. The recipient of numerous awards, he had a passion for teaching people how to learn and a talent for helping them to move beyond their limitations.

His robustness and joie de vivre, his singing and guitar playing, his genuine kindness and zany wit touched many lives on the campus and in the community. People will remember this bearded mountain man whose warm, mischievous grin invited laughter and inspired love in everyone he met.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 19, 7-9 p.m. at Fieldstone United Methodist Church, 3385 N. Franklin, Christiansburg. Services will be held at the same place on Wednesday, July 20, 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Greg Wells Fund to be used for deserving students: Roanoke College, 221 College Lane, Salem, VA 24153.
