Harriette Purdy Williams

Harriette Purdy Williams, 95, died June 19, 2016 in Cheraw, SC where she has lived for the past 10 years. She had previously lived in Christiansburg, VA since 1966. She was born March 7, 1921 in Sumter, SC to the late William H. & Harriette O. Purdy. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, James Thomas “Tommy” Williams, Jr. (2007) and by an infant daughter, Louise Purdy Williams (1949). She was a member of the Christiansburg Presbyterian Church where she was active in the Presbyterian Women. For many years Harriette was a volunteer at the Montgomery Regional Hospital and served as a tutor with the Literacy Volunteers of the New River Valley. She was a graduate of Converse College with a degree in Sociology in 1942. Harriette’s first job, at age 21, was with the Fidelity Bank in Spartanburg SC. She also worked during World War II at the ration board in Sumter SC.

Survivors include one daughter, Anne W. Shuford and son-in-law, Hope Shuford, Jr., Cheraw & Garden City, SC.; and one son, James “Jimmy” T. Williams, III, and daughter-in-law, Harriet L. Williams, Christiansburg, VA. Six grandchildren: Anne Hope S. and Benjie Thomas, Morganton, NC; Edward and Ansley Shuford, Aiken, SC; Virginia S. and Ricky Cox, Myrtle Beach, SC; Margaret S. and Ronnie Barth, Myrtle Beach, SC; David and Kati Williams, Blacksburg, VA; James and Nicole Williams, Bristow, VA. Fifteen great-grandchildren: Drew, Charlotte and Bryon Thomas; Jake, Ella, and Sam Shuford; Caleb, Gracie, and Linley Cox; Ruby Barth; Maggi and Hayli Williams; Zachary, Alex, and Lucas Williams.

The family wishes to offer a sincere thank you to the staff of Cheraw Health Care and Agape Hospice for their loving and devoted care of Miss Harriette.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, June 25, 2016, from 1-2 p.m. in the fellowship hall of Christiansburg Presbyterian Church. The Funeral Service will follow at 2 p.m., with Rev. Andrew Taylor-Troutman officiating. A graveside service will follow at Sunset Cemetery, Christiansburg.

Family suggests in lieu of flowers - memorials be made to Christiansburg Presbyterian Church or the Christiansburg Rescue Squad.
