Hugo P. Veit, D.V.M., Ph. D, of Christiansburg, retired professor of biomedical sciences and pathology in the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech died Sunday, September 17, 2006, after a courageous battle with cancer. At the time of his passing, he was surrounded and comforted by his family and loved ones.
Dr. Veit was born and reared in New York State. Dr. Veit received his bachelor?s of science in Animal Husbandry and D.V.M. degree from Cornell University and his Ph.D. from the University of Georgia. He was a member of the Virginia Tech faculty 1977 -2004, serving as pathology section chief from 1978 to 1982 and acting head of the Division of Pathobiology and Public Practice from 1979 to 1980. He was principal or co-principal investigator on more than 37 research projects. He authored or co-authored more than 65 chapters and articles in peer reviewed scientific publications, more than 20 papers in outreach or other publications, and more than 25 presentations or seminars at national or international scientific meetings. He was conferred with the title of professor emeritus in 2004. In 1965 Dr. Veit performed one year of missionary work in Haiti. From 1967 to 1974, he was owner and veterinarian of Fort Plain Animal Hospital in Fort Plain, NY.

He is survived by his wife, Lena Hill Veit and his four children; Suzanne T. Johnson and husband Dale of Charlotte, NC; Steven D. Veit and his wife Mary from Pinehurst, NC; Douglas E. Veit and wife Tamara of Blacksburg, VA; and Daniel J. Veit of Christiansburg, VA; seven granddaughters: Emily, Molly, Hannah, Carly, Alyssa, Abigail and Delanie and one step-grandson, Andy. He is also survived by two stepchildren, Eric Hill and his wife Leah of Christiansburg, VA and Andy Hill of Pineville, WVA. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Mathilda Henion.

There will be visitation for family and friends at Horne Funeral Home at 1300 N. Franklin Street, Christiansburg, VA from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 19. The funeral service will be held at St. Michael?s Lutheran Church at 2308 Merrimac Road, Blacksburg, VA on Wednesday, September 20 at 11:00 a.m.
