James Newton Elkins

James Newton Elkins, born on February 9, 1945, in Vaughn, West Virginia, went to his Heavenly home on October 30, 2024. He was preceded in death by his mother Gladys Wise, father Earl Elkins, brother Dallas Elkins, and sister Delores Falls. James is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Lura Ann Elkins, daughter Stephanie Elkins Tawney (Tracey), sons James Elkins Jr (Teresa) and Christopher Elkins, grandchildren Robert Hopkins Jr, Lance Elkins, and Alec Elkins, and great-grandchildren John Hopkins, Theodore Hopkins, and Caroline Hopkins. His brother Darrell Elkins (Mary Jane), numerous nieces and nephews whom will all cherish his memory. 

A proud Army veteran, James dedicated 40 years of his career to RAAP before retiring. He was an active member of Hope Valley Church. 

James was passionate about many things in life. He enjoyed collecting watches, was an avid NASCAR fan, and a loyal fan of the West Virginia Mountaineers. His spirit, kindness, and zest for life will be deeply missed by all who knew him. 

The family will receive visitors Wednesday, November 6, 2024, from 10-11am at Horne Funeral Home in Christiansburg, Virginia. Funeral services will follow at 11 am in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Jared Via and Pastor Kevin Meadows officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Dublin, Virginia.
