James A. Epperly, 84 of Christiansburg, left us peacefully to be with the Lord on May 26, 2024.
James served the Town of Christiansburg in the Police Department for 37 ½ years, retiring in 2002 at the rank of Captain. In December 1975, he was shot in the line of duty and was awarded the Police Purple Heart. He also worked at Horne Funeral Home for over 40 years, helping on removals and working services. James was a member of Faith Missionary Baptist Church for many years where he served numerous roles in the church. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and a beloved member of our community. James enjoyed gardening, spending time outdoors and being with his family and friends.
James was preceded in death by his father, Willie E. Epperly; mom, Bessie W. Epperly; sisters, Nina E. Williams (Freddie), Ruth E. Stump (Joe); brothers, William Epperly, Jr. and Eddie A. Epperly. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 63 years, Phyllis A. Epperly; children, Rhonda Epperly Reid; James ‘Darren’ Epperly; grandchildren, Morgan P. Reid, Ethan K. Reid, James ‘Reddic’ Epperly; and great-grandson, Zane J. Forinash. Also missing James are his sister, Jessie E. Osborne (Byron); two aunts; many nieces and nephews; as well as his lifelong friend, Bill Baker.
The family would like to thank all the nurses and staff at Pulaski Health and Rehab for their excellent care of James during his stay.
The visitation will be Thursday, May 30, 2024, from 4-7 p.m. at Horne Funeral Home. Funeral Services are Friday, May 31, 2024, at 11 a.m. in the Horne Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Mike Vest officiating. Entombment will follow in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
