James Edgar Garrison, Sr., of Christiansburg, died Thursday, July 7, 2016, at the age of 103 (only 7 weeks shy of 104) ending a wonderful long life. He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Ruth. They were married for 74 amazing years. His love for his wife set a model for all.
He leaves behind a devoted family: son, Jim Garrison, Jr. and his wife Marsha; daughter, Nina Clopton; granddaughters, Anne Garrison and her husband Dave Oates, and Kacy Clopton and her husband Sean Conner; grandson, Clint Garrison and his wife Bambi; great-grandson, Connor Garrison; and great-granddaughter, Jenna Garrison.
Jim was a plant manager for Gulf Oil Co. Distribution Plant in Charlottesville, finally retiring after 72 years at the age of 93. His first job was delivering mail on horseback. He loved to garden, winning battles with deer and groundhogs. He also refinished antique furniture, especially walnut pieces. He loved watching and attending sports events at UVa.
His love of his family and his faith, as well as his gentle love of, caring for, and respect for others set a high example for all who knew him. His faith was very evident in his daily life and in his church involvement. He served the church in a number of roles, and as a deacon emeritus. He ministered in every way possible. He loved to hug, tease, help, and comfort others. His mischievous smile with a “twinkle” in his eye, as well as his hugs, will be greatly missed.
The family will receive friends on Monday, July 11, 2016, from 6-8 p.m. at Horne Funeral Home in Christiansburg. The Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, July 12, 2016, at 1 p.m. at University Baptist Church, 1223 W. Main St., Charlottesville, with Rev. Keith Smith officiating.
