ATKINS, JOHN EDWARD, 97 of Maybrook, VA, passed away in the loving care of his family, on March 11, 2023 on the eve of his 98th birthday, at the home of his daughter and son-in-law in Christiansburg, VA.
He was born on March 12, 1925 the seventh child, (eight sons and a daughter), born to Warren L. and Blanche (Williams) Atkins, Maybrook, VA. He is preceded in death by his dear wife, Leathia Porterfield Atkins, in 2011. In addition to his wife and parents, he is preceded in death by seven brothers, James, Keith, David, Harry, his beloved brother Warren (June), Curtis, and Billy Ray Atkins, a sister, Dorothy “Dot” Camper. He was the last of his family.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Kathy Atkins and Andy Eames, Christiansburg; daughter and son-in-law, Lenora and Thomas Turner, Roanoke; four grandchildren, Gregory (Leah) Atkins, Christiansburg; and Lara and Thomas Turner of Roanoke; Allison Turner of Charlottesville; great-grandchildren Nahla and Gabriel Turner; his special niece, Dorothy Atkins Perdue, Maybrook, sister-in-law Dora (June) Atkins, and too many nieces and nephews to name.
John was proud to have served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II along with five of his brothers, later known as the “Maybrook Men.” He was a true American hero and a member of the Greatest Generation. He will be greatly missed by many.
No visitation will be held. A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 am on Wednesday, March 15, 2023 at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Christiansburg with Rev. Dr. A. Timothy Hight officiating.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish to honor his memory may contribute to Grace Life Baptist Church, 1640 Peppers Ferry Rd, Christiansburg, VA.
The family wishes to thank the many family and friends who loved and supported him throughout the years and especially during his illness. Also, they thank the caring staff of Carilion Clinic Hospice, especially to caregivers Becky, Amy, and Rebekah; the Salem VA Home Based Primary Care caregivers, Leigh, Dayna, Tyler, Nancy, Sonya, Jason, Shelley; nursing staff at Fresenius Kidney care Montgomery County, and Carilion Clinic INR-NP Susan Harris.
