John Stephen Garnand

John S. Garnand died at the age of 76 on March 26, 2025. He was preceded in death by his parents Ambrose and Irene Garnand and by his brother Robert and his uncle Harold Garnand.

John is survived by his sisters Jenny Liu and Jane Wood; his nephews Daniel Liu, Douglas Wood and Stuart Wood. John thought often of his cousins in Illinois.

John graduated from Christiansburg High School and attended Virginia Tech. He enjoyed a variety of interests and loved learning. Serving in the Army Signal Corps in Vietnam he received the nickname "Radar" because he kept track of everything. Later he worked at Hubbell lighting and Virginia Tech. He also took care of the family farm, helping his family any way he could. John is greatly missed by his family and his friend , Dick Gregory. John's cat, Freddie, seemed to know that John was not well and stayed very close to him in recent months.

Thank you to the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Salem VA for his care. The family would like to also express gratitude to John's church family for their prayers and particularly to his special friends there, John and Gail Stewart.

Graveside services will be private. A memorial service is planned for a future date. Condolences may be left online at Horne Funeral Home.
