Joseph Price-O'Brien

April 26, 1950 — April 16, 2025

Riner VA

Joseph Timothy Price-O’Brien of Terry’s Fork, Virginia passed away this past Wednesday, April 16th 2025. Joe, also affectionately known by many nicknames, such as Obie, Jobie, and José, was born on April 26th, 1950. He leaves behind a wife of 42 years, Sanford Taylor Price-O’Brien, and his daughter, Morgan Sanford Price-O’Brien, and her two sons, Michael Clarkson Sargent and Joseph Douglas Sargent. He was always quick to make new friends, and he touched many lives with his passion for learning, for ham radio, for communications, and for speaking foreign languages. After a rewarding career in the Navy, Joe attended Old Dominion University (ODU), where he met his wife. Joe and Sanford married, and after his graduation they moved to SWVA, which they have called home for 37 years. A life long member of the American Radio Relay League (ARRL), he loved sharing the joy of ham radio and Morse code with new operators. Joe worked in the engineering departments at Virginia Tech and several other companies. Later he returned to his RADAR skills and worked in Alaska, where he lived for a few years as a child and later during his service in the Navy. RADAR also took him to work at the FAA at the end of his career. His love for his work, friends, and family was undeniable. And he poured his passion into all aspects of life. His family asks in lieu of flowers that donations be made to The Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration (AFTD) to raise awareness for this type of dementia. A private celebration of life will be held at a later date.
