STEWART, JOSEPH CLAY, age 91, of Elliston, died peacefully at his home, Big Spring Farm, on Monday, November 13, 2006.
He was born on January 29, 1915, in Seneca Hollow and was a 1939 graduate of the Reppert School of Auctioneering. Joe enjoyed a sixty-one year career as an auctioneer, presiding over auctions of land and livestock in Danville, Roanoke, Christiansburg and surrounding areas. He was owner of the Christiansburg and Roanoke Livestock Markets. He was a long time representative of the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors District C. In that capacity, especially, he worked to live by the creed that he learned in auctioneering school, ?stand up, speak up, and shut up.?
An avid hunter and farmer, devoted father, grandfather, and husband, and friend to many, he lived a long and admirable life that served as testament to the rewards of perseverance and steadfast determination. He was preceded in death by friend and mentor, Floyd Childress, who he said ?was the smartest man he ever knew.?
He was predeceased by his parents, his wife, Ruby Stewart, his son, Little Joe (Sammy), and his brothers, Bud and Buck Stewart.
He is survived by his daughters and son-in-law, Sandra Weddle of Elliston, Julia and Mac Milton of Shawsville. In addition, he is survived by his grandchildren and their spouses, Donna and Tim Barger of Pilot, Barry and Julie Stewart of Shawsville, Brian and Vivian Stewart of Roanoke, Jamie and Becky Weddle and Andrea (Sissy) Weddle of Elliston, Stewart and Travis Harvey of Shawsville, Joseph, Zach and Stiles Milton, all of Shawsville, eleven great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, his sister and husband, Lois and Hale Stout of Marietta, Georgia, sister-in-law, Dottie Stewart, cousin Margie Odell both of Salem and nieces, Joyce Graham and Annette David. Additional survivors include Janie and Georgia Elliott, his ?best girls? and his longtime friends and helpers, Jim and Charity Anders of Willis, without them he could not have kept going. They answered his every call.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, November 17, 2006, at Joe?s home at Big Spring Farm in Elliston with the Rev. Ellis Meredith officiating. Following the service, interment will be in Sunset Cemetery in Christiansburg. The family will receive friends at Horne Funeral Home, Christiansburg from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, November 16, 2006. The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Julia Hemphill and the staff of Carilion Family Medicine of Shawsville, the staff of Shawsville Pharmacy and to Carilion Home Health Nurse, Gin McCabe, for their uniquely devoted constant care and comfort. We also wish to thank caregivers Betty Bland and Jeanny Carter, who were aided by Beulah Gibson, Libby McCrae and Lisa Gardner and Joe?s friend, Eugene Young for his support. Their kindness and compassion were immeasurable, Simple words cannot begin to thank all of these people for their loving care, their prayers and their laughter and tears.
