Joseph Wendell Young Sr., age 79, of Christiansburg, answered the call to go home on Wednesday, September 26, 2012, at UVA Medical Center with his wife by his side.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, retired from the Radford Arsenal, and attended the Lighthouse Family Ministries Pentecostal Holiness Church where he served as a senior council member.
He is survived by Emma Young, his wife of 37 years. He is also survived by his son, Joseph W. Young, Jr. (Eric) and Step-children, Carol Teass, Etta Whitaker (Joe), Mark Weddel (Christina) and Brian Weddel (Gina).
His son would like to thank Velva Wirt for her support throughout his father’s illness. The family would also like to thank Wendell’s closest friends R.B. Linkous, Stanley Linkous, Dean Wagner and Nelson Vest.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, September 29, 2012, from 5-8 p.m. at Horne Funeral Home, Christiansburg. The funeral service will be held on Sunday, September 30th at 2 p.m. at Horne Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Buford Linkous officiating. Graveside military honors will be conducted by the Virginia Military Honors Group and the VFW Post 1184 at Sunset Cemetery, Christiansburg.
