Katherine Elizabeth (Betty) Martin Hanbury, 82, of Christiansburg, passed away on Saturday, February 25, 2012.
She was born in Montgomery County to the late Sam & Kathleen Graham Martin. She was also preceded in death by her husband, A. V. “Hank” Hanbury; brother, Philip Martin; and sister, Barbara Lloyd. She is survived by her son, Martin Hanbury; grandchildren, Phillip Hanbury, Laura Roberts & husband, Cory; great-grandchild, Logan Roberts; nieces and nephews, Mark Lloyd, IV, Samuel Lloyd & wife, Nicole, Valerie Lloyd and Beth Cornish; as well as many dear friends.
Betty was a retired school teacher for Montgomery County Public Schools. She was also the Children’s Consultant for the Association of Unity Churches, Eastern Region, as well as an educator for the GED program. She was a long time participant for the National Senior Olympics and an avid participant of Elder Hostel.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, February 28, 2012, from 5-8 pm at Horne Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 29, 2012, at 2 pm at the Horne Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Linda Taylor officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery, Christiansburg.
The family appreciates flowers, however, anyone wishing to make a donation in Betty’s name may do so to the Montgomery County Retired Teachers Scholarship, c/o Treasurer, 101 Allegheny St., Christiansburg. This is a scholarship for students to receive higher education in the teaching field and was close to Betty’s heart.
