Kerry Plato Sutherland

Kerry Plato Sutherland, 94, of Blacksburg, husband of the late Bertha V. Sutherland, passed away Monday, June 26, 2017. He was born October 17, 1922, in Haysi, VA and was the son of the late H. Clint Sutherland and Lillie Myrtle Hay Sutherland. He served the country during World War II as a member of the United States Marine Corps. He retired after an extensive career with the United States Postal Service, serving as postmaster in Grundy, VA, White Sulphur Springs, WV and Christiansburg, VA. He graduated from Hiwassee College and was a member of the Blacksburg United Methodist Church.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Brenda Lee Sutherland, Charlene Merle Sutherland, Kate Joyce Sutherland; and his brother, Grayson ‘Gene’ Eugene Sutherland.

He is survived by his sons, Michael Kent Sutherland of Christiansburg, VA and Kerry Patrick Sutherland of Duncan, SC; sisters, Mabel Hurst of Newport News, VA and Opal Ashworth of Blacksburg, VA; brother, Larry Sutherland of Myrtle Beach, SC; as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Visitation will be held on Friday, July 7, 2017, at noon at Blacksburg United Methodist Church, followed by the Funeral Service at 2 p.m., with Rev. Jennifer Fletcher officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery, Christiansburg.
