Margaret Pierce

July 23, 1914 — February 23, 2005

Margaret Pierce died February 23, 2005, at a Bangor, Maine health care facility. She was born on July 23, 1914, in Huntington, West Virginia, daughter of Rev. Robert L. Kinnaird and Sadie D. Kinnaird. Her early years were spent in Catlettsburg, Kentucky and Ronceverte, West Virginia. She moved to Christiansburg, Virginia in 1925, when her father became minister of the Christiansburg Presbyterian Church. The church was always central to her life and she served it over the years in many ways including as an organist, choir member and Sunday school teacher.

She graduated from Christiansburg High School and attended St. Andrews Presbyterian College. During the 1930?s, she worked for the Health Department and in the Treasurer?s Office at Virginia Tech. She married Edwin D. Pierce of Christiansburg in 1940 and they enjoyed a mutually devoted marriage until his death in 1976. She spent some of the World War II years with him while he was stationed at an air base in Tonopah, Nevada and later shared many interesting stories of life in that desert town.

After being a devoted stay-at-home mother for a number of years, she went to work in the family business, Pierce Insurance Agency, in the late 1960?s, earning an insurance license. She handled the daily financial matters of the business and particularly enjoyed helping customers with judicial bonds. After her husband?s death, she became a volunteer at the Montgomery County Hospital. She faithfully handled the magazine cart, bringing cheer to hospital patients with magazines she had collected from friends and relatives.

In retirement, she particularly enjoyed playing board games with her grandchildren, playing bridge with her close friends, reading romance novels and working crossword puzzles. She was also a long-time member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and brothers Robert F. Kinnaird and James D. Kinnaird. She is survived by her son, Edwin D. Pierce, Jr. and daughter-in-law Robin H. Pierce of Jacksonville, Florida and Veazie, Maine; her grandsons, Matthew D. Pierce of Charlotte, North Carolina and Evan R. Pierce of Veazie, Maine; and many special nieces and nephews.
