Martin Christopher Sayer, 36, of Christiansburg, Virginia, passed away on Tuesday, July 25, 2023.
He was born in Hong Kong on June 20, 1987, the son of Paul and Jenny Sayer of Fareham, England.
Martin received both his bachelor’s degree and MBA from Radford University, where he was and will remain a standard for excellence on the tennis courts. The future Hall of Famer and program's all-time leader in wins, he was a four-time Big South Player of the Year and made four appearances in the NCAA Singles Tournament.
Internationally, Martin climbed to as high as No. 25 in the Junior World Rankings and would later represent Hong Kong on its Davis Cup team.
Following his remarkable playing career, Martin turned to coaching, which included stints at his alma mater and most recently Virginia Tech.
Martin leaves behind to cherish many fond memories, his wife of 11 years, Ashley Sayer of Christiansburg, son, Roger; two brothers, Matthew and his wife Sara of Ringwood, England, Nicholas and his wife Alex of Lynchburg, Va.; sister Natalie of Daniel Island, S.C.; seven nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
A celebration of his life will be held Thursday, August 3, 2023 at Horne Funeral Home, 1300 North Franklin Street, Christiansburg, Va., 24073. Visitation will be at 1 p.m., with service to follow at 2 p.m.
Following the service, a reception will take place at 4 p.m. at the South Club inside Lane Stadium on the campus of Virginia Tech. Parking is available at Tech Softball Park, 240 Beamer Way, Blacksburg, Va.
