Mary Smith

December 10, 1930 — November 2, 2013

Mary Ann (Slemp) Smith, of Melrose, MA, passed away peacefully with her husband at her side, on Saturday morning, November 2, 2013 at Genesis Westford House in Westford, MA. She was 82 years old.

A resident of Melrose, MA of 47 years, Mary Ann was born in Jacksonville, Florida on December 10, 1930, daughter of the late Howard and Thelma (Peregoy) Slemp of Riner, Virginia. She grew up in Jacksonville and Lakeland, Florida, graduating from Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville, Florida. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree from Florida State University in 1952 & her Masters Degree in Education from Boston University in 1975. Mary Ann was an elementary school teacher in Melrose for over 20 years. She enjoyed gardening, puzzles, traveling by train, dining out, feeding the birds from their backyard feeder and spending time with her family. She always looked forward to visiting with her parents on their farm in Riner, where her mother grew up. She enjoyed her walks on the farm, picking blackberries, helping her mother tend to the vegetable garden and helping her father with his cattle.
Mary Ann had hoped to retire to her beloved farm in Riner. The family is comforted in the knowledge that she will be resting with her parents, in Christiansburg near her farm for all time.

Mary Ann is survived by her beloved husband of 62 years, Horace M. Smith. She is loved and will be missed by her daughter Ellen Williford and husband Tony of Fulshear, Texas; her son Jeffrey Smith and his wife Susan of Atkinson, New Hampshire and her son Bradford Smith and his wife Eileen of Westford, Massachusetts. She is the loving Grammy to Rebecca Smith, Alexander Smith, Leah Rodgers and her husband Joe, Katie Smith, Michael Smith and his wife Kayleigh, Eric Smith and her great-grandson, Brenden Smith. She is the beloved sister of Howard Slemp Jr. of Annapolis, Maryland. She loved and will be missed by her cousins, friends and neighbors.

The graveside service will be held on Friday, November 15, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Sunset Cemetery, Christiansburg, with Rev. Jerry Dowdy officiating.
