On March 1, 2016, Mary Virginia Collins Roop, 84, of Radford, departed this life to rejoin her beloved husband, Raymond and son, Ray.
Mary was born on July 19, 1931, to Frank and Florence Collins of the Doe Creek area of Giles County. She always spoke fondly of growing up in the Mountain Lake community, the joys and hardships of family life in the mountains.
Mary met a young man, Raymond, from the Dry Valley area, whom she married and raised seven children. Raising seven children with Raymond on the road as a trucker sounds like a big job, but she took it all in stride and usually had an extra plate for her kids’ many friends who were always around. Raising children and feeding whoever came to supper was what ‘Granny’ enjoyed most. She always had a pan of biscuits ready for her kids and the hunters of the family.
Along with her parents, husband, and son, Mary was preceded in death by her sister, Helen; and brother, Robert. She is survived by her daughters, Cheryl (Bobby), Tammy (Mark), Janet (Robert); sons, Ralph (Jodi), Steve, and Cecil; 18 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; sisters, Shirley and Reba; and the many children and friends who called her ‘Granny’.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, March 5, 2016, from 12-2 p.m. at Horne Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will begin at 2 p.m. in the Chapel, with Pastor T. Michael Bond officiating. Interment will follow in Belmont Cemetery.
