Melda Bailey Cochran, 92, of Christiansburg, VA, passed away to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, September 22, 2011, after a short illness. She had been a resident of Richfield Care Center in Salem, VA, for the past 6 years. Melda was born on December 26, 1918, in Iaeger, WV. Her husband, Paul F. Cochran; a son, Roger D. Cochran; 2 sisters; 3 brothers and her parents, Jerry B. & Clara H. Bailey, preceded her in death. She leaves behind 3 beloved sons, D. Lee Cochran (Doris), Glenn W. Cochran (Sarah), both of Christiansburg, VA, and Jerry P. Cochran (Sandra), of Huntington, WV; and 1 sister, Nellie Waldron of Piketon, OH. Also surviving are 7 grandchildren, Stuart Cochran (Debbie), Tara Cochran Vance (Chuck), Jeff Cochran, Susan Cochran-Morris (Harvey), Corinthia Cochran Turley (Justin), Melissa Cochran Aviram (Tal) and Evette Cochran Noynes; 13 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great grandchild. Melda was well known in Christiansburg for her homemade rolls and cinnamon buns. She loved to cook! She also loved to crochet and made some beautiful pieces for her family and friends. Working outside in her yard and flowerbeds was a joy to her at her home on South Franklin Street in Christiansburg up until the time she entered Richfield. A graveside service will be held for family and friends on Sunday, September 25, 2011, at 1:00 pm at Sunset Cemetery on South Franklin Street, Christiansburg, with Rev. Doug Kanney officiating. Interment will follow the service. Flowers are appreciated or in lieu of flowers, donations in Melda’s memory to either the Christiansburg Fire Department, 110 Depot Street, Christiansburg, VA 24073, or to the Christiansburg Rescue Squad, P O Box 176, Christiansburg, VA 24068, are also welcome. A reception with refreshments will be held immediately after the graveside service for family and friends at St. Paul United Methodist Church, Activities Building (behind the church), Christiansburg, VA.
