Morton Gilmore

February 24, 1926 — December 5, 2007

GILMORE, MORTON V. “MORT”, age 81, of Christiansburg, died Wednesday, December 5, 2007, in Heritage Hall Nursing Home.

Mr. Gilmore served with the Pacific 3rd Fleet during World War II and participated in four major campaigns and the occupation of Japan. After he was discharged from the U.S. Navy he served 19 years with the VA Army National Guard and retired as a Chief Warrant Officer. Upon retiring from military service, he served as the Director of Parks and Recreation for the Town of Christiansburg for 16 years. He drove a Special Education School Bus for Montgomery County Public Schools for five years before his final retirement in June 2000. Mr. Gilmore attended the Ellett Valley Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Loving husband, father and grandfather he will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife, Thelma Gilmore; daughter, Joanna Angle and partner, W.D. Altman, of Chester, S.C.; daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Jack Spangler, Christiansburg; son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Jerry and Janet Gilmore, Roanoke; step-son and wife, Frank and Connie Moses, Radford, VA; step-daughter and husband, Karen and William Dove, Christiansburg, VA; brother & sister-in-law, Daniel and Arlene Gilmore, Deland, FL; seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Mr. Gilmore donated his body to medical science.

The family wishes to extend special thanks to Montgomery Regional Hospital, Heritage Hall Nursing Home and Adventa Hospice Services.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the hospice of your choice. A memorial service will be conducted in the Horne Funeral Home Chapel, 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, with Rev. Steve Akers officiating.
