Patricia Sweeney Slaughter, of Christiansburg, Virginia, passed away suddenly, at her home, on September 17, 2017. She was 76 years old.
Pat was born in Portsmouth, Virginia, and grew up in the Richmond, Virginia area. She graduated from Highland Springs High School, where she excelled academically, and was very active in activities outside of class. She was a member of Job’s Daughters, and Captain of the cheerleading team. She attended Longwood College. In 1961, she married J. Lewis Slaughter, a
Richmond native and Virginia Tech engineering graduate, and they remained married until his death in 2011. Over their years together, Pat and Lewis lived abroad, and in various locations in the United States, ultimately settling in the Ivy Lake community of Forest, Virginia. Pat held a number of part-time positions over the years, including secretarial jobs with Peakland
Baptist Church and Virginia Episcopal School. She was also well-known to the young people of Lynchburg, because she was the primary proctor for the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test (ASVAB), given at high schools across the region, and at the Marine Corps Reserve center in Lynchburg.
Pat is preceded in death by her parents, Daniel James Sweeney, and Berniece B. Sweeney, of Richmond, Virginia. Pat is survived by her two sons; Stephen Marshall Slaughter, and his wife, Carol, of Christiansburg, and their three sons - - Ethan, Jack and Sam. J. Brian Slaughter, and his
wife, Kelly, of Virginia Beach, and their five children - - Daniel, Teddy, Finn, Quinn and Brecken. She is also survived by a number of cousins, primarily in the Richmond area.
