Ray Junior Smith, born on June 10, 1948, passed away peacefully on August 21 2024. He leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories, deeply embedded in the hearts of his family and friends.

Ray was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Jean Smith. Together, they built a warm and caring family, which includes their daughter, Susan Crawford. He was also a proud grandfather to nine grandchildren and a loving great-grandfather to five great-grandchildren, each of brought him immense joy.

In addition his immediate family, Ray is survived by his caring sisters, Roberta Poff, Elizabeth Smith, Wanda Smith, Regina, and Bobby Kendrick, along with his brothers and sisters-in-law, Earl and Shirley Sanson, George and Brenda Neece, Howard and Donna Sowers, Bonnie Whitaker, and Dave and Kathy Whitlock. Their support and love were a source of strength for him throughout his life.

Ray Junior Smith was well-known for his passions and interests. He cherished time spent with family and friends, often taking rides by the river. An avid NASCAR fan, he enjoyed cheering for his favorite teams, with Virginia Tech being his hometown pride. His engaging personality and zest for life will be mourned dearly by all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Hester Smith, and his brothers and their wives: Randolph Smith, Ed and Linda Smith, Doug and Dianne Smith, Michael Smith, and Bill Poff. Ray also mourned the loss of his sister, Patty and Lester Buchanan, and his daughter, Angela Bishop.

Visitation for Ray will be held on August 27, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by a Funeral Service at 11:00 AM until 12:00 PM, both at Horne Funeral Home & Cremation Service located at 1300 N Franklin St, Christiansburg, VA 24073. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens with Pastor Steve Coffey officiating.

Ray Junior Smith’s life was a testament to the love of family, and his memory will remain alive in the hearts of those he touched.

The family would like to express their gratitude to Roanoke Memorial Hospital and to their great neighbors who mowed the grass for them and have been there for them during this time.
