Rev. M. C. ‘Jim’ Sutphin, 92, of Christiansburg, passed away on Tuesday, April 1, 2014, at home with his family.
He pastored many churches in the area – Oak Grove Church, Sugar Grove Baptist, Cedar Springs Baptist, Sowders Chapel Baptist, West Milford Baptist, Anath Baptist, East Radford Baptist, Eggleston Baptist, and Maranatha Baptist; most recently he was minister of hospital visitation at Gethsemane Baptist Church.
Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Sutphin; parents, William and Ollie Sutphin; brothers, Bob, Raymond, and Charlie; sisters, Thelma Hurley and Leola Hawkins; son-in-law, Scott Bonham; and great-granddaughter, Lainey Schultz. Jim is survived by his son, Kenneth Sutphin and wife Benira of Lugoff, SC; daughters, Della Cameron and husband Larry of Front Royal, VA, Judy Lynn Bonham of Roanoke, and Donna Baratta and husband Mike of Vinton; grandchildren, Jamie Lee Taylor, Chase Sutphin and wife Tressa, Dale Chrisman Underwood, Drusilla Lynn Underwood, Tonya Lee Hough and husband Mike, Brian Trump, Jessica Stitcher and husband Peter, and Michael Baratta; great-grandchildren, Scott Taylor, Bailey Sutphin, Tayra Sutphin, Sedona Sutphin, Michael Hoback, Lexi Dixon, Laura Hooker, Aiden Stitcher, and Emily Stitcher; sisters, Opal Jones and husband Robert of Salem, and Frances Mullins and husband Ed of Radford; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
The family received friends on Thursday, April 3, 2014, from 6-8 p.m. at Gethsemane Baptist Church, 2006 Preston Street, Radford. The funeral service was held on Friday, April 4, 2014, at 2 p.m. at the Church, with Pastor Jerry Gibson officiating. Interment with military honors followed in Sunset Cemetery, Christiansburg.
