Richard Lee Akers

May 5, 1950 — July 19, 2015

Richard Lee Akers, 65, of Roanoke, passed away on Sunday, July 19, 2015. After a long battle with A.L.S., he is finally at peace. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles LeRoy and Alfreda Akers.

Richard is survived by his wife, Judy Cupp Akers; son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Anna Akers; sisters and brothers-in-law, Doris and Dan Sutphin, Jean and Donald Sires; mother-in-law, Myrtle Cupp; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Brenda Akers Sharp and husband Don, Joyce and Virgil Spradlin, Iola and Jerry Bishop; nieces and nephews, Celeste and Scott Parker, Karen and Dale Wade, Brian and Tonya Bishop, Rhonda and Jim Schmid, Grady and Patti Spradlin, Tracy and Dean Shepherd, Jodi and Mark Matison, Julie Lentini, Whitney Akers; as well as other extended family and friends.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 22, 2015, from 5-8 p.m. at Horne Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, July 23, 2015, at 11 a.m. in the Horne Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Willis Greenstreet, Jr. and Pastor Troy Mays officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Christiansburg.

The family would like to thank Amedisys Hospice, as well as the staff at the VA Medical Center for their care of Richard.
