RITTENHOUSE, DR. RICHARD LEE, age 74, of Christiansburg, and formerly of Piqua, Ohio, passed away Thursday, May 19, 2005 at New River Valley Medical Center.
He graduated from Wittenburg College, Ohio University (BS); Ohio State University (MS); Virginia Tech (PhD.). Dr. Rittenhouse taught in the Biology Department of Radford University, where he retired June 1, 1992 with 30 years of service. He served in the U. S. Air Force and attended the Edgemont Christian Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George Leonard Rittenhouse and Lucille Mae Smith Rittenhouse. Survivors include his wife, Betsy S. Chamberlain Rittenhouse; mother-in-law, Lucy C. Sarver; step-children, Charles Ralph Chamberlain, Anne C. McCann and Teresa C. (Mrs. Jeffrey) Simmons; step grandchildren, Jeramiah and Chase Chamberlain, Stephanie A. Boyd, Stacy, Shannon & James Akers, Dennis & Evan Simmons; nieces LeAnn Niblick; Mark Rittenhouse; special step nieces, Leslie Mitchell, Kristin C. Martin; uncles, Wesley Smith, Delbert Smith & wife, Anita; aunt, Mrs. Jane Drennan; sisters-in-law, Sandra S. Ridinger, Jenny S. Wise, Jane S. Collins; brothers-in-law, Nelson Ridinger, Elwood Collins, James Wise.
There will be a celebration of his life 11 a.m. Monday, May 23, at the Edgemont Christian Church with Rev. Christopher E. Yopp officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence, 910 Cardinal Drive anytime, also in the church fellowship hall following the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Edgemont Christian Church, 2289 Edgemont Road; Christiansburg, VA 24073.
