It is with deep sadness that we announce Bob Turner went peacefully to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on February 7, 2025 at the age of 82. Bob was a beloved husband, father, and friend and was affectionately known as “Pops” to his many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Born in Richmond, VA, Bob earned both his Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and a Master's degree in Statistics from Virginia Tech. During his time as a Hokie, he met his future wife, Sharon, on a blind date. Their second date was unforgettable, ending with an emergency room visit after Bob accidentally ran over her finger while ice skating at the VT duck pond.
His playing career with the VT baseball team was cut short due to a violation of team rules when he left town during spring break to meet Sharon’s parents. Despite this setback, his passion for baseball endured as he helped establish a VT club softball team. Bob's passion for sports extended well beyond his college years. In addition to being an avid softball player, Bob was actively involved in various sports, including basketball, volleyball, and bowling in both church and other competitive leagues. Even as his health declined, Bob continued to bowl, demonstrating his love of sports. Whether on the field, in the bowling alley, or playing games with the family, Bob was always a fierce competitor. His love of sports and family was evident as he always rearranged his work schedule to attend his children's sports activities, cheering them on from the sidelines.
In his leisure time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, watching western movies, and power naps. Bob dedicated over 30 years to providing for his family through his work at the Radford Arsenal. Starting in an analog world with slide rules and punch cards, he continuously adapted and evolved his expertise into the digital age. Beyond his professional commitments, Bob was a steadfast volunteer at his church, often found working behind the scenes in the kitchen, mowing the grounds, or organizing picnics and gatherings.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Edna Turner. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Sharon; their children, Kyla Erickson (Paul), Rob Turner (Susan), Joey Turner, Amy Fisher (Daniel); grandchildren Andrew, Heidi, Emily (Adam), Betsy (Ryan), Madeline, Jacob (Maggie), Caleb, Noah, Chase, Bryson, Katie; great grandchildren Stella, Evy, Belle, Ena, Cody, Declan, Tirzah, and baby Revers; brother David Turner (Pat), sister Benita Turner (Renee); nephew Lee Turner (Kelly) and Riley, niece Carrie Ganley (Ryan) and Maddie. He will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
The family will receive friends on Monday February 10th at 1:30pm – 3:00pm at Horne Funeral Home.
The family extends many thanks to the Doctors, Nurses, and Staff at Lewis Gale Montgomery Hospital for their excellent care and thoughtfulness during his time there.
